Is snoring bad for your health?
Snoring comes as a result of vibration of soft tissues located near the middle throat. When we sleep in a supine position, the muscles relax, reverse the tongue and open the mouth. As a consequence, the nasal and throat channel becomes narrower, which makes it difficult to get air into the lungs. Unfortunately, not everyone realizes that snoring is not only the cause of sleepless nights for everyone else in the room, but is the effect of a life-threatening disorder, which is sleep apnea.
Obstructive sleep apnea causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep. This type of apnea occurs when your throat muscles relax and block your airway during sleep. The patient, struggling for the air, wakes up, although he usually does not realize it. The first effective inhale is usually accompanied with a sharp snore.
A serious consequence of obstructive sleep apnea is the hypoxia of the body. It affects the well-being of a snorer who, after waking up often feels tired weak, has headaches, has trouble concentrating and remembering. Hypoxia usually results in: hypertension, ischemic disease and heart failure, impaired rhythm, and even stroke or diabetes.

Treatment
Surgical treatment, broadens the path for the air to flow normally by correcting the anatomical structure of the throat. The most common treatments include:
1. treatments to increase muscle tone of the soft palate, tongue and throat,
2. treatments to improve the nasal patency, such as the correction of a bent nasal septum, polypectomy, endoscopic surgery of the paranasal sinuses and
3. correction or removal of the pharyngeal tonsils and / or the palatine tonsils.
Bipolar thermoablation
Bipolar thermoablation is a radiological method that allows to obtain a proper nasal patency, as well as “stiffening” of soft tissues in the throat so that they do not vibrate during breathing. Treatments performed using the Celon apparatus are virtually bloodless, there is no damage to the mucous membrane of the nose and throat. The treatment lasts from 20 – 40 min, carried out under local anesthesia. The patient usually does not stay in the clinic overnight and after surgery can safely return home or work. The full healing period lasts about 4 – 6 weeks, and the effects of treatment are noticeable after a few days.
Pillar Implant
In Dom Lekarski Medical Center there is also the possibility of implanting Pillar implants. During the Pillar procedure, the doctor, using a sterile tool, places 3 small implants in the soft palate (approximately 0.7 cm long and 0.08 cm wide). Over time, implants, due to natural body reactions, cause a structural stiffening of the soft palate and reduce the vibrations of the tissues that cause snoring. Pillar implants are made of a polyester material that has been used as implantable medical devices for over 50 years.
Pillar implants are recommended primarily to people at risk, i.e. with obesity or smokers.
